What does Wendy mean, and where does it come from?
Wendy is widely believed to have been invented or popularized by J.M. Barrie for his 1904 play Peter Pan, inspired by a young friend named Margaret Henley who called him "Friendy-Wendy." Before Barrie's work, the name was virtually unknown, making it one of the rare names created by a work of fiction. Some scholars have noted earlier scattered uses of Wendy as a diminutive of the Welsh name Gwendolen. The name peaked in popularity during the 1960s and 1970s in both the United States and the United Kingdom, and it continues to evoke a sense of youthful imagination and warmth.
